Anvers Chocolate factory
Commenced as a cottage industry November 1989, by Igor Van Gerwen, who came to Tasmania from Belgium. Anvers Confectionery is now a flourishing small business making fine couverture chocolate products for the retail, cafe and fine dining markets. Products range from hand-made chocolate truffles, chocolate oranges, fudge, seasonal variants, single origin blocks and hollow goods to moulded pralines.
To guarantee the quality of his products, Igor trains his staff in the art of manipulating chocolate and is continuously sourcing the finest ingredients. Not only does Anvers use fresh Tasmanian cream, pure butter, exquisite liquors and natural flavours, but also the world’s most refined couverture chocolate. Anvers’ dark chocolate blend has a cacao content of 64% and the milk 38%, and is conched to a very fine stage. Igor also has a close relationship with the growers of the rarest chocolate in the world: Fortunato No 4 Peruvian Nacional. Anvers have the sole Australian rights to this exquisite chocolate and are one of the only few chocolateries in the world to be allocated a share of the yearly harvest.
Igor has found the Tasmanian Cream and Butter to be the richest in flavour of any in the world. This combined with Anvers’ signature or single-origin chocolate form an ideal basis for truffles, fudge and pralines. Local wine, whiskey, beer and seasonal Tasmanian ingredients such as apples, raspberries, and strawberries find their way into his chocolate delicacies.
The chocolate factory at the “House of Anvers” is open for visitors and has a small museum depicting the history of chocolate with viewing windows where people can see our chocolatiers at work. On site is also a function centre in a conservatory, a tasting centre and retail outlet. We also have indoor and outdoor seating in our café where we serve Belgian style breakfasts, Belgian waffles, light lunches and of course; chocolate based desserts.
The “House of Anvers” is set in a 1920’s Californian bungalow surrounded by parklands. It is open 7 days a week from 7am to 5 pm and entry is free of charge. During COVID -19 The House of Anvers is still open from 9am to 5pm to service the community with Takeaway Hot Drinks, Waffles, Baguettes, Quiches, Soup, Cake slices, Birthday Cakes, chocolate snowballs and our full chocolate range.
